OnePlus 3 is now official: Snapdragon 820, 6GB of RAM and great Camera

OnePlus 3 SmartPhoneThe OnePlus 3 is an improved smartphone from last years OnePlus 2. Flying under the radar, Carl Pei, Co-founder of OnePlus is changing how the company interacts with customers. The biggest change to the smartphone is its availability. No longer purchase through an invite only system, the device will be available through the OnePlus website.

In short, Pei wants the OnePlus 3 to be a top line smartphone without the high price tag. And it looks like the OnePlus 3 has evolved enough to be a worthy consideration as a flagship model.

OnePlus 3 Hardware

The hardware powering the OnePlus 3 are comparable, if not better than, Samsung or HTC Android smartphones. The processor is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 with an Adreno 530 GPU. The screen is a 5.5-inch Optic AMOLED. This isn’t as pretty as other top models, but it’s hard to notice the difference for the everyday user. You will notice the difference in battery life, and the phone runs at a cooler temperature.

The fact there’s 6GB of RAM is a massive boost. This is more than other competing smartphones. The processor, GPU, and RAM combined to make the OnePlus 3 a special smartphone for its price. The internal storage is 64GB with no external microSD slot.

Camera, Android OS and Battery

The front camera is 16MP with electronic and optical stabilization technology (EIS and OIS). Smart Capture technology gives high-quality images with ease. The camera app focuses and processes faster to save you time. Dynamic De-noise takes several photos to create clearer images.

OxygenOS, OnePlus’ Android version, has changed to be more user-friendly. Based on Marshmallow, there’s less bloatware installed. The OS is customizable for users to personalize their Android experience, battery life, and performance. Night mode and dark theme are good ideas but not implement well.

Dash Charge on the OnePlus 3 gives the smartphone amazing charging time. Using the USB-C cord and power brick that come with the device, it’s possible to get up to 63% charge in 30 minutes. This is enough charge for 7 plus hours of HD video playback (Tested with 2K resolution and 50% screen brightness. So how long it lasts for actual use is under question). The battery is 3,000mAh.

The OnePlus 3 is $399 unlocked. Despite being unlocked, it can only be used on AT&T, T-Mobile and related MVNOs in the US. An official car charger is $29.95 and wall charger is $19.95.
