Some gimmicks work wonderfully. For example, let’s take a trip down memory lane and recall the episode of South Park where Eric Cartman, the incorrigible antagonist in many cases against his three other childhood friends, buys a theme park and advertises that no one can enjoy it with exception for he, himself. Apple may have taken this strategy to heart when considering their product line has consistently released white plastic hardware prior to the availability of the color black. Whether ivory or ebony, people always supply Apple with an outstanding hardware release, lining up out front of stores and camping to get their hands on new products. It seems as though when sales begin to slow, Apple’s motto is “bring in a new color”!
On Thursday, April 28th, 2011, the white iPhone 4 became available through Apple stores and authorized retailers including AT&T and Verizon. What was reportedly a rare setback, the white iPhone 4 was delayed for release due to “manufacturing challenges”. Point and case, there are only so many things that can go wrong with plastic molds – if the reserved release of polar white pocket device wasn’t in some way related to building anticipation, explanation is due as to why a simple plastic cover took 10 months to get right… Apple sticks to the claims that the manufacturing difficulty set them back and that the white phone was originally meant to release with the black one last June. Either way, consumers that held out before picking up an iPhone now have the choice of whether white or black accessorizes better with their daily attires and attitudes.
Apple’s success is not slowing anytime soon, especially with the release of a highly anticipated model. Just last quarter the tech giant sold almost 18.7 million iPhones which is a massive increase of about 113% over last year’s figures. Whether it’s the versatility, the sixty-five thousand applications on the App Store, the branding or just the chic fad of owning an “i” product, strategies like keeping people in angst may be working exactly how they were intended. One anonymous Apple product owner stated, “I have a white docking station at home for my old iPod and all white gear for my Apple products. I wanted the iPhone 4 immediately but actually chose to wait until the white one came out. Now I’m hoping maybe the price will come down a little but it’s good to finally see a phone out there by Apple that won’t entirely throw off my matching set <jokingly>”.
For all of those shiny, happy people who have also been waiting in suspense for a version of the iPhone 4 that won’t clash with their lighter, brighter and whiter side, the white version of the iPhone 4 is now available in the following countries: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Macau, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, UK and the US.
it’s crazy how apple is increasing its sales. The iPhone 4 sells very well! The white one might even attract more people…
I am following Apples sales figures for quite a while now and I collected some information on sales in Switzerland. It’s amazing how many iPhones have been sold there. Amongst the population of 7 Million are already over 1 Million iPhones. A huge market share.
I created some charts about the incredible sales in Switzerland, check it out: http://www.cloudtec.ch/blog/mobile/iphone-verkaufszahlen-schweiz.html
