Microsoft is trying to create a new computing experience with Surface Studio. Using the new 28” PixelSense Display and Surface Dial, this device wants to be on the desktops of creative types.
Surface Studio Hardware
The Surface Studio’s hardware is an i5/i7 Intel Core Processor; up to 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 4GB GDDR5 GPU; and 8/6/32GB RAM.
The insides of the Surface Studio aren’t the interesting points. The display is a 28-inch PixelSense – Creatively designed for creative people. The resolution is 4500×3000 with 192 PPI; 10-Point Multi-touch screen; and an aspect ratio of 3:2.
The zero-gravity hinge means you can use the device at whatever angle is most comfortable. Using the pen on the screen is now easier and more natural than before. The Surface Pen has a 12-month battery and 1024 levels of pressure.
Something special is the Surface Dial. Users will enjoy a Haptic Feedback from the dial when they use it. The vibrations move through an aluminium body, connecting you to the Surface Dial.
Surface Studio works as a team
The Surface Studio, PixelSense Display and Surface Dial make a great creative team. Users won’t be constrained by a lack of display size when creating graphics, editing photos and video. How users will use the Surface Dial will determine what apps are released.
Apps for the Surface Studio include: Sketchable, for sketching on a digital canvas; Mental Canvas, for 3D drawing, animation and editing; Draw PDF, for creating perfect lines and plans; other apps include Moho 12, StaffPad and Bluebeam Revu.
Microsoft’s default apps and Office have also received upgrades. Word, Excel, Publisher and Groove can be controlled by the Surface Dial. Other Surface models, like the Surface 4, are compatible with the Dial.
Other features include a password free sign-in using Window’s Hello Face; Adobe’s Creative Suite (Photoshop, Lightroom, Premier Pro) work very well on this device with the accessories; Solidworks has increased functionality; Xbox Wireless control pads connect without issue.
A 1TB/Intel Core i5-8GB-dGPU Surface Studio is $2,999. The 1TB Intel Core i7-16GB-dGPU model is $3,499. The premium 2TB Intel Core i7-32GB-dGPU model coming in at $4,199 (All includes the PixelSense display). The Surface Dial is $99.99.
