GoPro fights to come back by announcing Hero 5 Black and Karma Drone

GoPro Hero 5 Black and Hero 5 SessionGoPro has announced two new cameras and a drone. The Hero 5 Black, the flagship. and the Hero 5 Session. GoPro Karma Drone has an interesting design and great features as we will discuss below.

GoPro Hero 5 Black and Session

The Hero 5 Black and Session have a few features in common. You can shot videos in 4K at a maximum 30 frames per second. The devices withstand 10 meters underwater submersion without any add-ons. Voice control is a good addition to both models. There’s a choice of 7 languages currently available. ProTune video mode is included, meaning the Hero 5 Session’s images and videos can be edited and colours corrected.

The menu on this range of GoPro has changed to something simpler. The Hero 5 Black and Session have one button operation. The Hero 5 Black has added buttons for photo and video recording and also Stereo speakers on both devices. According to GoPro, the Hero 5 will have something that the Hero 4 didn’t have – Professional grade digital image stabilization.

The differences between the pair are noticeable. The Hero 5 Black has a built-in GPS, can take RAW photos using a 12-megapixel camera. There’s a 2-inch LCD touch screen for ease of use. GoPro is using Wide Dynamic Range video to give users higher quality video.

The Hero 5 Session has a 10-megapixel camera, no LCD touchscreen, no higher quality image and video modes like RAW or WDR.

GoPro Karma Drone

Karma Drone and Go Pro Plus

The Karma drone has some thought put into its design. The camera (Hero 4, 5 Black and Session) sits on the front of the drone, not slung below. This removes the rotors from getting into the shot. Camera stabilisation is achieved through a 3-axis gimbal. Also a good news is that you can remove the gimbal and use the drone as a handheld device.

Shot modes include dronie, cable cam, reveal and orbit. The sharing of your video in real time is easier with the introduction of a ‘passenger app’. This gives someone else the chance to watch what the drone is filming.

GoPro Plus is an interesting announcement. This is a cloud-based service for GoPro users. The good thing is that you can save Images and videos in the cloud automatically when the camera is plugged home. Quick, Splice, Capture and the desktop app have access to files on the cloud.

The GoPro Hero 5 Black will cost $399 and the Hero 5 Session is $299. The Karma drone is $799 on its own, $1099 with the Hero 5 Black or $999 with the Session. Access to GoPro Plus is $4.95 a month.
