YouTube turns ten – Happy first decade

YouTube LogoSome websites feel as if the Internet was designed with them as a planned fixture, weaving seamlessly through websites and making so much sense it’s hard to imagine an Internet without them. One of those sites is YouTube, the video hosting site that is now ten years old.

Currently, YouTube stands as a behemoth of video hosting like no other. It had its own teething problems, though, with many people at one point believing YouTube had no value, was drain for money, and required too much money and infrastructure to make the site work. Google saw the potential in YouTube, and had more than enough funds to spend on what was needed.

YouTube LogoYouTube hasn’t changed their format for awhile, though small updates have been made. Today they announced that they will be switching up the way they handle comments, including sorting them by relevance rather than date, and connecting it all with Google+.

Not only will relevant comments be given full priority rather than just the top two highest rated as it is today. They will also be threaded so you can easily read the way people are speaking with one another. This is a big improvement to the current system that has been in place for too long, where you have to actually pull up comments that are being quoted to see what people were responding to.

YouTube Founders crazy enough to build DIY Magazine Site

Zeen WebsiteThis is nothing new, and many would say the founders of YouTube are insane to think that making yet another Do-It-Yourself magazine site is going to go anywhere. However, YouTube was not the first of its kind either. Google was certainly not the first of its kind. There must exist far more naysayers than optimists in the world so that there might be the opportunities like this for these guys, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.

They have bet their money on the domain, emulating the term “zine”, which refers to an online magazine. If you were to sign up, your new magazine would have the address or some other creative name. Then they send you a confirmation email and tell you that nothing is running yet, but they will notify you as soon as it is. This is a polite way for saying, “Website under construction”.

VEVO have big plans for the Future

Vevo LogoA few years ago music videos were everywhere; literally. Not only were they being rapidly pirated, but they were also being distributed by countless people and there was very little monetization of them. That’s when two big names in the recording industry (Sony and Universal) teamed up to create VEVO.

VEVO was created about two years ago with one purpose in mind – music videos. It began launching videos on the ever popular YouTube and monetized their videos with ads that were on the first run of videos (YouTube got ads on afterwards). VEVO has also expanded past YouTube and distributed music videos on other places such as Xbox Live.
