IDC: Smartphone sales reached 1 Billion in 2013

Girl PhoneFor the first time ever smartphone sales have reached a billion in a single year, as the final reports for 2013 come in and the numbers are crunched.

It is an indication of how more affordable smartphones, such as cheap Android run devices from multiple manufacturers has impacted the market. But it isn’t a surprise to anyone who has been watching the growing number of smartphone owners over the years, as every year sales figures continued to climb.

The report was released by technology market analyzers International Data Corporation (IDC). Mobile Phone Research Manager Ramos Llamas pointed out the incredible jump in smartphone use in just two years

Gartner, IDC reports confirm that PC Shipments continue to shrink

Gartner PC Shipments 2Q13It appears that PC shipments are not doing quite well over the last years. The numbers continue to drop and the latest reports that just came out today from Gartner and IDC confirm this trend. Compared to the same semester of the last year the shrink is quite drastic, 11 percent. Maybe now it’s the last call for the big companies you see in the chart to come up with something new, otherwise they might risk going backwards.

This dropping trend of PC shipments acts worldwide and all companies are affected. As we can see in the first image(from Gartner), Acer and ASUS were the companies that recorded the highest drop in the second semester of 2013, with 35.3 and 20.5 percent less PC delivered.

Android overtakes iOS in the latest IDC tablet shipments report

Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet Hands OnAfter they revealed last week how mobile phone shipments did in the first semester of 2013, IDC released this week the estimates for tablet shipments.

The biggest surprise is that iOS tablets(altogether) fall behind Android tablets in terms of OS market share worldwide. In the first semester of 2013, Android reached 56.5 percent market share, while iOS fell at 39.6 percent. Compared with the same period of last year, the numbers are almost reversed because last year iOS had 58.1 percent while Android had 39.4 percent worldwide market share.

We all know that there are dozens of Android tablets and that Apple currently has just 2-3 tablets on sale, but after what we saw last years, when there were just iPads against the rest of the tablets, this first report is still coming as a surprise.

Feature Phones shipments under Smartphones for the first time ever

Girl PhoneAs of today, IDC reports that in the past quarter there were more smartphones shipped than feature phones. In the first quarter of 2013, for the first time ever, there were 216.2 million smartphones shipped from a total of 418.6 million cellphones worldwide. So 51.6 percent of the cellphones shipped worldwide were smartphones.

Compared to the same quarter of 2012, the year-over-year change is outstanding for the smartphone market. The market recorded a 41.6 percent growth compared to the 152.7 million units shipped in 1Q12, but was 5.1 percent lower than the last quarter of 2012.
