Apple held an event this afternoon, talking about the future of their iPhone line. As was speculated by many, one of the devices announced was the iPhone 5s. But along with that came word of the iPhone 5c, two releases that tech fans are sure to get excited about.
iPhone 5Ss
Every iPhone has had its ‘S’ upgrade, but this one is a little bit different. Unlike the iPhone 4S or the 3GS, this one is one isn’t just a standard improvement of a couple of features. They went all out on boosting the performance of the 5s, making it something more like an all new product between the 5 and 6 in the series.
They seem to have aimed to make it twice what the last iPhone 5 was. Phil Schiller called it the most “forward-thinking phone” the company has ever launched. Given the fact that it has a 64-bit A7 processor with twice the number of transistors as the first iPhone 5, and a CPU and GPU speed clocking in at two times as fast, that sounds like a pretty accurate boast.
It also have a 8 MP camera, 1136 x 640 resolution with 326 pixel-per-inch, 1080p HD digital recording and playback. But perhaps most exciting is the fingerprint identity sensor that has been built right into the home button.
This feature in particular is a game changer. Brands have been scrambling to release a solid fingerprint technology compatible device, and this could be argued as the first step in that evolution. It is definitely the first major product launch to include it with a totally functional application.
Everything else is more or less what it was with the iPhone 5, but the 5S definitely has some incredible new toys. It comes in the standard black, white and grey.
iPhone 5c
Next, we have the iPhone 5c. Where the 5S is being touted as the most forward-thinking phone, this one is said to be the most colorful iPhone yet. That might not seem that impressive, but when paired to the new design of both phones it is. Everything is more sleek, more bright and – yes – more colorful.
Using the 4-inch retina widescreen display, 1136 x 640 resolution and HD video, it is going to be a gorgeous phone for media. It will also have the same 8 MP iSight camera with 3X zoom and face detection.
While it isn’t as impressive under the hood (it holds an A6 chip rather than the A7 of the iPhone 5s), it is still a solid phone.
It will come in white, pink, yellow, blue and green to start, but that might change in the future if this proves to be as big as Apple is hoping.
The Prices
What has really got people excited isn’t just the specifications of the phone. It is the price of each of them, which are shockingly reasonable for what is usually one of the most expensive brands on the market.
The iPhone 5s starts at just $199 for 16 GB, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB. Compare that to the starting price of the first iPhone 5, which was almost $650 without a contract deal for a 16GB.
As for the iPhone 5c, is starts at only $99 for 16GB, or $199 for 32GB. Giving us the official “discount iPhone” we have been hearing rumors of for ages.
Considering the fact that both of these phones have a higher level of tech specs than many other full release phones do, this is a pretty big deal. Sure, it doesn’t have some of the higher screen resolutions of the latest devices from brands like Samsung. But it is still high definition, and the way the processor should boost speeds will more than make up for that. Besides, it is an iPhone.
Plus, Apple’s iOS is still one of the better and more intuitive interfaces out there. Even if you don’t like the company, you have to give them that much credit. Their iPhones are incredibly user friendly for anyone, no matter how little they know about mobile phones.
Since the iPhone 4S is still the best selling product Apple has ever released (it is still being sold like crazy today), I predict that the iPhone 5s and 5c both are going to be major successes. They bring the iPhone to people who normally wouldn’t spend the cash, costing less and offering some truly impressive features.
Even me, someone who flat out refuses to buy from Apple, might have to take a second look at this one. There is only so much I can be prepared to exist, and the iPhone 5c comes in green!
