We have all heard the fictitious stories surrounding Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto; he is a mysterious hacker in Tokyo who created a currency that could be used anonymously for anything legal or illegal. That he chose that name as a pseudonym to protect his identity, thanks to threats by shadowy governments that want his currency to fall.

According to Newsweek, the real story is nothing like that.

Mt Gox, the BitCoin marketplace, has shut down all points of contact online as they go into PR crisis mode and unofficially confirm their pending bankruptcy. The reason? Over $375 million potential BitCoins lost in a theft.

The news of a potential theft was released a week ago, but nothing was confirmed and the source wasn’t clear. Now unverified reports of over 750,000 lost BitCoins have surfaced, and the sudden shutdown of Mt. Gox appears to confirm it.

Andreessen Horowitz has been an early supporter of Bitcoin, an online form of currency that has recently been at the center of a lot of controversy. They have invested nearly $50 million in startups related to Bitcoin, and have been vocal about the positive benefits of such a system of payment.

The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs has been tasked with determining the benefits versus the risk of such forms of digital currency.
