Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1Microsoft has shown off their new updates for both the Windows 8.1 desktop and mobile OS during their Build 2014 keynote. The reveal is an effort to hook developers that have so far been far from enthusiastic about the latest Windows version.

They have shown off the 8.1 updates at the Build 2014 conference. Their annual event draws developers and tech industry leaders from all over the world. Today they had two major announcements: no licensing fees for OEM and ODM partners working on smartphones and tablets with screens under 9″ (which is most), and a converged developer platform.

Microsoft Surface Pro 2As we all expected, today Microsoft announced the second generation of Surface tablets: Surface Pro 2 and Surface 2. There are plenty of things we need talk about so I’ll try to wrap up for you and not forget anything. Both tablets are faster, come with an improved battery life and kickstand, but that’s not all.

I’ll start with Surface Pro 2 or as Microsoft likes to say the “true laptop replacement”, which is true knowing what it features inside. The first generation of Surface Pro had an Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor, so it was quite fast at that time.With Surface Pro 2, Microsoft wanted to go even further and put the fourth generation of Intel Core i5 Haswell Processor, which is faster, but the most important thing is that it offers a way better battery life.

What to expect from Microsoft Build 2013 Conference

Microsoft Build Conference 2013Last year Microsoft’s Build 2012 Conference led to the announcement of the Surface tablets and details about their new Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. With Build 2013 coming, rumors are swirling like crazy about what might be on the horizon.

While we can’t know for sure what they are going to talk about, we can at least speculate…and look at what news on Microsoft has leaked lately.

An interesting note from the Wall Street Journal shows a couple of news leaks that won’t factor into the conference, but might show the direction that Microsoft is leaning for future projects.

Windows 8.1 Start Screen Surprisingly, earlier today Microsoft showed us at Computex 2013 some of the features of the upcoming Windows 8.1 OS.  It’s surprising because we’re just few weeks before Build Conference, where Microsoft will surely announce some interesting things(both hardware and software).

We all know that there have been more than a few complaints about Windows 8, which failed to impress to the extent that Windows 7 did. Some longtime users of the operating system are used to this, with versions usually alternating in quality, and every other release being a bust. Microsoft might have broken that pattern with the updated Windows 8.1, a new version of their latest release that is already getting much higher praise than the original.
