GrapheneGraphene is the latest big thing, an atom-thick, flexible material that could change the wave of displays and touchscreen technology. Which is exactly why companies like Google, Apple and Samsung are in a race to snatch up all the patents possible.

So far, the actual use of graphene is a ways off. Even the potential applications are purely theoretical, with most tentative ideas based more around ultra thin devices that can be folded to change the general purpose (think tablets into smartphones, and back again).

Nokia HeadquartersFor years Nokia was one of the largest cell phone manufacturers in the world. As Smartphones were on the rise Nokia saw their profit and market share lagging behind their competitors and tried to catch up. While many of its attempts yielded some success (such as the long usage of Qt by many companies) it was meeting a lot of failure on the mobile market. Samsung vs AppleApple and Samsung’s patent war has been spreading across the globe with varied results depending on the country. While many would agree that everyone has a right to protect their ideas and inventions, the problem with patent trolls is that these patents are on such minute features that it becomes almost laughable – though I’m sure the company being sued wouldn’t agree. Since the nature of the patents are often really trivial in nature the term “patent troll” is often applied to those companies and individuals who excessively exercise their patent rights. So what exactly is Intellectual Ventures doing patent trolling? Let’s find out!
