The new Huawei P9 smartphone has been announced. Huawei aims to take on Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and LG’s G5. The looks aren’t much different to the P8. That’s fine because the design is stylish, simple and professional. A P9 Plus, a larger version, is also on the way.
Huawei P9 – Chips and Memory
What’s inside Huawei’s new P9 and P9 Plus is what’s of interest. Huawei makes their own chipsets and Huawei’s new P9 has the Kirin 955 SoC build. This is an updated version of the 950 from the Mate 8. The chip is an octa-core CPU configuration using four Cortex-A72 and four Cortex-A53 cores. This gives Huawei’s new P9 and P9 Plus a good mix of power and energy efficiency. Having a lot of power is fine. Except if the smartphone runs out of battery power too quickly. There is also a Mali-T880 MP4 GPU. This combination makes the P9 and P9 Plus Huawei’s most powerful smartphone to date.
Memory in Huawei’s new P9 comes in different options. The P9 comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage or 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The P9 Plus is only available with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. MicroSD card slots are available for those who want to expand their memory.
Display and Camera
The display on the new Huawei P9 and P9 Plus remains 1080p. Huawei’s belief is that the extra battery life afforded by a 1080p display is more important than better graphics. The display size of the P9 is 5.2 inches with a 1920×1080 resolution. This is the same size as the P8. The p9 Plus is 5.5 inches with 1920×1080 resolution. There’s also an AMOLED panel over LCD. The P9 and P9 Plus both have Huawei’s “Press Touch” display technology.
The camera in Huawei P9 and P9 Plus was designed with the German camera company Leica. The rear camera is a dual camera with 12 megapixels. The lens is from Leica, performs well in low light and has an aperture of F/1.1. Focusing is done using laser technology and has optical image stabilization when filming video. The flash is a dual tone LED flash. On the front, the camera has 8 megapixels.
