Verizon has started field testing its new 5G technology. 5G is the next generation for mobile device connectivity and will replace 4G networks over time. 5G was the original due date of 5G networks, according to the industry. Verizon has other plans and wants to see its 5G network being available for users beginning in 2017. The Verizon network will be the world’s first 5G network and has speeds capable of moving data around faster.
Roger Gurnani is the chief information and technology architect for Verizon. Gurnani believes the future is beyond his description in terms of possibilities. He calls the 5G network one of those disruptive products and services where the potential is beyond imagination. The speed tests done so far have shown that Verizon’s 5G network is 30 to 50 times faster than the current 4G network. It is also faster than Google Fibre, which is connected by cables to the home.
There are purposes beyond entertainment that the 5G network could facilitate. The network could download a zip film of Guardian’s of the Galaxy in 15 seconds. It could also allow a surgeon in Sydney to operate via a 5G connection in New York due to how responsive and fast the network is.
There is a race to have the 5G network in place. South Korea is hosting the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang wants to have a 5G network setup so visitors, athletes and officials so the new technology can be showcased. The Olympics is also driving Japan to upgrade to the 5G network. 2020 is the year Japan hopes to have its 5G network ready in time for the Summer Olympic Games. China is pushing hard to have a 5G network connecting their cities and population as well.
Verizon is working with venture capitalists involved in the creation of emerging technologies. Many emerging technologies will benefit from faster speeds and a more responsive connection. Being able to create devices and apps planned for higher speeds will help adaptation of a new network.
It is unknown on when 5G networks will be available. Verizon is running field tests and will begin deployment in 2017. It’s likely to be only in a select few cities in the US like the 4G roll out previously. How the 5G network will change connectivity and the potential of new devices will be seen in over the next five years.
