Motorola Announces its Newest Device with MOTOBLUR™: Motorola CHARM™

Exclusively for T-Mobile USA, Motorola CHARM packs smartphone features and social graces into a pocketable design with Android™ 2.1 and MOTOBLURTM enhancements

July 07, 2010

Libertyville, Ill. — July 7, 2010 —Motorola (NYSE: MOT) today announced the upcoming availability of Motorola CHARM™, a touch screen smartphone that packs a social networking punch with Android™ 2.1, MOTOBLURTM enhancements, a compact design and a BACKTRACK™ feature that makes screen navigation even more intuitive.

Motorola CHARM is expected to be available this summer exclusively in the U.S. for customers of T-Mobile USA, Inc.

“Motorola strives to provide an increased customizable user experience, which is enabled by our latest enhancements to MOTOBLUR and featured on the new Motorola CHARM,” said Jean Pierre Le Cannellier, vice president, Americas Marketing, Motorola Mobile Devices. “Combine that with a compact design, easy handling and all the features you would expect from a smartphone, and we believe that CHARM with MOTOBLUR adds the social ability and workability consumers are looking for.”

Motorola CHARM provides consumers all the features of a smartphone with the intuitive navigation of a 2.8 inch touch screen – all in a compact, pocketable design that makes messaging a snap using the combination of a full QWERTY keyboard and touch screen. The BACKTRACK navigation pad, located on the back of the smartphone directly behind the home screen, is similar to a laptop touch panel and enables an unobstructed view of the Web, texts, e-mails and news feeds. Plus, with Android 2.1 and enhanced MOTOBLUR features, CHARM offers new customization and filtering options.

“Being social with friends and family comes naturally for T-Mobile customers, and we think mobilizing their social experiences should be effortless,” said Saj Sahay, director of product management, T-Mobile USA. “With the new Motorola CHARM and enhancements to the Android and MOTOBLUR experience, we’re bringing more social skills to our broad portfolio of Android-powered smartphones.”

Motorola CHARM will be the first device in the U.S. to feature an enhanced version of MOTOBLUR built on Android 2.1, which syncs contacts, posts, messages, photos and much more in easy to manage streams — from sources such as Facebook®, MySpace, Twitter™, Gmail™, work and personal e-mail. MOTOBLUR now allows for even greater customization, providing users more options to follow who and what really matters.

MOTOBLUR filters can be selected from a single social networking account, contacts, group or messaging account so that users can select only the information they want to stream live to the Happenings and Messages widgets. Users can move and resize pre-loaded home screen widgets to personalize up to seven home screen panels for an even more custom experience. Lastly, consumers can manage their phone’s battery consumption by selecting different power modes to conserve battery.

Contacts in MOTOBLUR are automatically synced to the phone from personal and work e-mail and social network accounts. MOTOBLUR will continue to provide convenience and peace of mind, as lost devices can be located from a secure personal information portal and even remotely erased if necessary. In addition, one user name and password brings back contacts, messages and connectivity to previously configured networks and e-mail providers.

Last, but not least, Moto Phone Portal enables you to access and manage your phone’s data from any browser through a USB or Wi-Fi connection. Edit content and view important phone information while at home or on-the-go. Leave pictures on a friend’s PC, share a video at the local Internet café or share a presentation during an important business meeting.

Additional features on Motorola CHARM include:

Adobe® Flash® enabled Web browsing experience to view most of today’s content-rich sites

Full suite of Google™ services including: Google Search™, Google Maps™, Gmail™ and access to thousands of apps on Android Market™

Pinch to zoom functionality and two-finger swipe to easily surf the Web and sort through photos

Capture sharp photos with a 3MP camera and KODAK PERFECT TOUCH technology for better, brighter pictures

One-touch social media uploads to Facebook®, MySpace, PicasaTM and PhotoBucket®

CrystalTalkTM PLUS for enhanced audio and call quality with a second microphone for increased voice quality while filtering out background noise

Corporate email pushed immediately to the device for instant inbox updates

Like his brother(Droid), Droid X comes with some interesting features and will be one of the rivals for iPhone 4 or HTC Evo.

The front of the phone has a 4.3-inches WVGA screen that supports a 854 x 480 resolution and 16:9 ratio. Later this year, Adobe Flash Player will come to support video streaming as well as gaming experience.

The virtual keyboard supports multitouch, so you can type up to 50 words per minute using one continuous finger motion across the screen. Just under the screen there are positioned four physical buttons: Menu, Home, Back and Search.

Right on the back of the phone there’s an 8 megapixel camera equipped with digital zoom, auto focus, dual LED flash and image editing tools. Videos are captured in HD(720p) format and content can be displayed through DLNA and HDMI. The audio quality will be great, three microphones are available for directional audio capture and noise cancellation.

The internal features rock as well: 1Ghz OMAP processor and Android 2.1 with MotoBlur(Android Froyo will be supported somewhere this summer). The internal memory has 8 Gb, but with microSD card extension you can end up having up to 40 Gb. Under the back cover, it’s an 1540 mAh battery.

We found out that there also plenty of connectivity features available: 3G, GPRS, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, DLNA, HDMI, 3.5mm jack. Gps is available(through aGps) and comes with several applications: Google Maps, Google Maps Navigation, Google Latitude, Street View and eCompass. Droid X can also be used as mobile hotspot and can support up to five connected devices.

Webkit HTML5 based browser will be the first option to surf the Internet because it’s featuring pinch-to-zoom and Adobe Flash 10.1(after update).

Motorola Droid X smartphone will be available in US starting July 15 and will cost somewhere near $200(at two year contract).

Motorola has manged to enhance on this model a new feature called MotoBlur. As they say, MotoBlur is a new feature that “automatically delivers your messages, posts, tweets, pics and contacts directly to you without having to open multiple apps”. To deliver the best social results, a reverse flip QWERTY keyboard has been added behind the screen.

As we observe in the picture, the new phone has 3.1-inches TFT capacitive touchscreen display and 256K colors.

Sliding the phone to the left side will unveil the QWERTY backflip keyboard, which is divided in 4-rows and include also a 5 megapixel camera device(with autofocus and LED flash). Above the keyboard is the 3.5 mm and the on/off power button, while the camera shutter key is on right side(when the keyboard is not unfolded). Under the back case is a 1400 mAh Li Ion battery that will provide up to 315 hrs in standby mode.

Backflip comes with Android 1.5 and can be updated to 2.1 version according to Motorola. Despite the enhance of the social networks, the MotoBlur user interface also features photo sharing(Picasa, Photobucket, MySpace, Facebook).

The phone has the more than enough connectivity features: 3G, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi, microUSB. Gps is available through A-Gps support and the following applications can help you if you plan to use it: Google Maps, Google Latitude, Google Maps Street View, eCompass, AT&T Navigator, AT&T Maps. It seem that Droid is not the single model and Motorola had another Android based model, called Cliq.

Cliq features a QWERTY sliding keyboard, same as Droid, but it’s more stylish and personalised. It weights 163 grams, has 15,6 mm thick and is made by plastic.

The display has 3.1-inches and is TFT capacitive one, supporting a resolution up to 320 x 480 pixels.

Under the display we find 3 buttons: Menu, Home and Back(from left to right) while the top of phone hosts the 3.5mm headphone jack port.

On the right side we have a power/lock button and the camera key one.

The left is the place where volume rocker buttons are placed, along with a microUSB port and a mute switch.

If you slide the phone to right you’ll discover the 4-row QWERTY keyboard. Keys are rounded and very easy to be pressed so it’s a little chance to accidentally press a wrong key while typing. The alt, space and sym keys are situated on the last row of the keyboard while the D-pad is on the left side and the enter key is hosted on the right side.

A 5-megapixel camera is on the back of the phone and has autofocus, 4x digital zoom, but no Led flash. It captures photos at 2592 x 1944 pixels and videos in HVGA format @24fps (MP4). Support for geo-tagging and picture editing is also available. Also on the back we will find, under a panel the 1420 mAh lithium polymer battery capable of lasting 325 hours in standby time.

Cliq operating system is Android version 1.5 (Cupcake) powered by a Qualcomm MSM7201A 528 MHz processor. The user interface is called MotoBlur and supports perfectly our favourite applications: MySpace, Photobucket, Picasa, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo Mail, Google, last.fm, Quickoffice, YouTube, Accuweather, Amazon Music Store, imeem, Shazam. You can use or personalise this apps in any way you want using them as widgets on the main screen.

Connectivity is a point where Motorola phone shines: 3G, Gprs, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, microUSB(v 2.00) are the hard workers. Gps is also available with A-Gps support and comes with Google Maps with Street View app and E-Compass support.

Phone is available in stores since October(2009) and according to T-Mobile can be bought with a price starting from 200$.

The expected comeback of Motorola will begin next year, when more than 20 mobile phone models could be released. One of the interesting models that we have information is the Droid one, a model that could battle with iPhone, Xperia, N97 or other successful known models.

I don’t even remember last time when Motorola took the market by surprise and release a new model(perhaps was RAZR). The new Droid is something we expected from other companies, but let’s face the reality and give Motorola the credit for what they’ve done.

As the name mention, phone will come with Google Android and with little help from Verizon, the smartphone market will adopt a new model.

Construction is nice, solid(plastic+metal) and the phone weights 165 grams which is pretty normal since it supports a very comfortable QWERTY keyboard and a big 3.7-inch touchscreen. The display supports a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels and under it four capacitive buttons: back, menu, home and search.

Sliding the phone on the right will unveil a nice QWERTY keyboard. Whether you will use it for text-messaging, emails or social networks the clicky buttons will help you a lot. The 5-way navigation key could not miss on this Android model and is situated in right side of the keyboard.

The camera, situated on the back is a 5 megapixel device and comes with autofocus, dual LED flash, geo-tagging, image stabilization. Videos are recorded at a 720 x 480 resolution with 24fps.

As we mentioned the Droid model comes with Google Android OS(v 2.0) and his processor is an Arm Cortex A8(same as iPhone 3G S) at 550Mhz. The RAM memory has 256 Mb while the ROM one has 512 Mb.

Connectivity offers usual features such as: GPRS, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, microUSB port. On the top of the phone is situated a 3.5mm jack port and also there is a power/sleep button. Gps is available through A-Gps support, but we don’t know further informations about the programs that can help you use it.

In the box phone comes with a Li-Ion standard battery with 1400 mAh and capable of 350h in stand by or almost 7 hours in talk time mode.

Motorola claims the new smartphone will be released in 2010, so we’ll have to wait a little more to see if it breaks through or not.
