Google had announced this week on their official blog that the new search index called Caffeine is now working on the search page. We think this is a major news and we like to feature a post today to announce how Google search works now.

The image posted by Google is quite clear where Google search is heading: to deliver best results in the shortest period of time.

Basically this is what Caffeine does, it woks 50% faster than the old index and it provides more fresh results in real time, now more than ever. Year by year Internet evolves and Google must search through more and more websites to deliver some of the best queries. PageRank had a big importance at the old index, but now Caffeine wants to go to the next level and take into consideration more factors.

Articles, images, videos are posted almost instantly in any corner of the world and searchers need to find the latest relevant content, while publishers expect to found their content as quickly as possible. Google have to keep up with social networks( Twitter, Facebook, MySpace) and choose live results from them, because this is some of the user demands.

Here’s how the old index worked:

Our old index had several layers, some of which were refreshed at a faster rate than others; the main layer would update every couple of weeks. To refresh a layer of the old index, we would analyze the entire web, which meant there was a significant delay between when we found a page and made it available to you.

And now what Caffeine means:

With Caffeine, we analyze the web in small portions and update our search index on a continuous basis, globally. As we find new pages, or new information on existing pages, we can add these straight to the index. That means you can find fresher information than ever before—no matter when or where it was published.

Caffeine lets us index web pages on an enormous scale. In fact, every second Caffeine processes hundreds of thousands of pages in parallel. If this were a pile of paper it would grow three miles taller every second. Caffeine takes up nearly 100 million gigabytes of storage in one database and adds new information at a rate of hundreds of thousands of gigabytes per day. You would need 625,000 of the largest iPods to store that much information; if these were stacked end-to-end they would go for more than 40 miles.

We’ve built Caffeine with the future in mind. Not only is it fresher, it’s a robust foundation that makes it possible for us to build an even faster and comprehensive search engine that scales with the growth of information online, and delivers even more relevant search results to you. So stay tuned, and look for more improvements in the months to come.

The motto of the new invention is: TV meets web. Web meets TV.

During that live event Google boys presented their future release as a revolutionary product designed especially for US people, who spend five hours per day watching TV.

They are trying to merge Web, which is a part that Google conquered ever since the search engine started with TV world, something totally new for them.

LESS TIME FINDING MORE TIME WATCHING

CONTROL AND PERSONALIZE WHAT YOU WATCH

MAKE YOUR TV CONTENT MORE INTERESTING

MORE THAN JUST A TV

At the top screen of the TV you will always find a Quick Search box, which combines results from both, TV and Internet to deliver the best experience. Every show can be recorded by selecting your DVR from the menu. If the show is not found, Google showed us that we can choose to buy it from places like Fox, Hulu or Amazon.

If you haven’t idea of something to watch, just hit the Home Screen and you will find Google suggestions(based on what you have watched) or simply just access any video from the Web and the TV will love to see it. Sport fans will love it as it contains picture-in-picture feature and this means you can watch multiple games in the same screen.

What are the requirements for Google TV ? It’s simple: Wi-Fi or an ethernet cable and a HDMI cable that will connect to Google TV box. Apps or content can be pushed by Bluetooth from computer or Android smartphone.

Google TV is a mix of Chrome, Android and Flash 10.1 plugin. The partners are Sony which will come with a full line of integrated TVs and an integrated Blu-ray player, and Logitech which will provide the companion box. All partners are powered by Intel.

Partnership with Dish Network. Subscribers will be able to “seamlessly integrate content” into Google TV. Best Buy is the retail partner for, well, selling you the gear.

Google TV will be ready for open source in the summer of 2011.

Even if we weren’t there, we will feature two of the most interesting things that occurred: Android 2.2 Froyo and later, Google TV.

The event begun with a small presentation of what Android operating system means these days: there are over 60 compatible devices, 21 OEMs, 48 countries, 59 carriers that use it. Each day, over 100.000 activations are made and Google is now on the second place after RIM on US smartphone sales market. Android Market hosts now over 50.000 apps ready to be downloaded and thanks to 180,000 developers this number will be always modified.

Next, to understand better what changes bring Android 2.2 (Froyo), five of the most interesting features will be discussed:

Speed

By adding JIT compiler to Froyo’s Dalvik virtual machine, Google managed to raise the speed to 2x-5x. A demo game was presented on two devices to see the differences between Eclair and Froyo updates and the last update reached 41 fps while the oldest only 29 fps.

Enterprise

There are over 20 new features available in Froyo for corporate users: auto-discovery, security policies, global address books, remote wipe, etc. Device admin API will also be supported and you will be able to backup your device if you plan to move to another one.

Services

A demo about Cloud-to-device Messaging API feature was presented. If you ever wanted to sent Google Maps Navigation directions from PC to the Android phone, now thanks to this feature, it is possible. Tethering and Hotspots will be available on the new OS and this means that your phone can act as a hotspot for other devices that would like to connect.

Browser

Because JavaScript loads 2x to 3x faster, Froyo browser will be one of the fastest mobile browser. Google is working hard to ensure that the future browsers will be able to use the camera, accelerometer thanks to some well designed APIs. Voice recognition will understand you better when you will want to call someone or just translate a text into another language.

One of the most expected browser feature was the support for Flash 10.1. It seams “much nicer [to work with Adobe] than just saying no.”

Market

Google announced new features for Android Market: find apps more easily, search inside apps, move apps to SD card and auto-update all and all are available on 2.2 Froyo. If an app crashes of causes an error, a feedback report can be sent directly to the developer and announce him what happened. This way, developers can view complete back end data, find out the problem and fix it.

So, to wrap it up the new improvements Android v2.2 Froyo get are pretty cool and seem to outclass Windows Phone 7 or iPhone 4.0 new OS.

Microsoft wants again to win a battle against Mozilla Firefox and it seems Internet Explorer 9 is set to go. The announcement has been made during MIX 2010 which take place at Las Vegas during 15 and 17 of March.

Internet Explorer is one of the browsers that we all had to use some day when we didn’t knew we had another alternative to browse the Internet. In modern days IE browser is used just to browse towards Mozilla site and get Firefox browser. Statistics say that, we don’t.

At the beginning Microsoft didn’t understood Firefox success, but lately Bill Gates boys seemed to use their brains a little more and find a solution. Internet Explorer 9 uses some of Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome secrets. How cool is that? Is not, really.

From Microsoft page about this latest invention we find out that Speed, HTML5 and Graphic are the new words for IE9 engine.

It seams Microsoft joined HTML standards in August 2009 and start to send his specialists on World Wide Web meetings. The idea behind HTML standards is to get an alternative on those kind of sites that told us “You should use Internet Explorer in order to see this page”. So soon we will be able to see this kind of sites even if we use Google Chrome, Opera or Mozilla Firefox.

A faster Javascript, CSS3 and Direct 2D technology seems to be the Microsoft’s all-in bets that they will make a browser faster enough to battle the usual ones.

A fail example from previous version of Internet Explorer( 8 ) can be seen in the following picture. The browser itself got the FAIL tag written(from acidtest), so we didn’t modified anything.

The preview of the Beta version can be downloaded from Microsoft website, but be careful, who knows. The browser works only on Vista or 7 systems so don’t bother to try to install it on XP. If you are angry on Microsoft, you can buy a T-shirt from this address and support the community.

We will try to keep you updated as soon as we find out more about this new browser because now this thing is not ready for surfing.

source

Probably one important event which captures our attention in the beginning of the year is the release of Google first mobile phone, called Nexus One. You remember that next year we’ve analyzed some of the coolest gadgets including iPhone, Motorola Droid, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and so on, but this new phone just made official by Google will be on 2010 newspapers and blogs. These days Google made this rumour official on their website all specifications and features of the phone, including an order page in case you want to buy it (who doesn’t?). We will offer you an update…let’s say a review made with official specs.

The Android phone comes with a 3.7-inches touchscreen display and supports 800 x 480 pixels resolution. Google claims the contrast rate is 100,000:1 and the response rate-1ms. As main features we remember the accelerometer and digital compass.

Phone seems thinner, but a little longer than than iPhone having: 119 x 59.8 x 11.5 mm. It weights 135 grams with the included battery. By the way, the battery has 1400mAH one capable of lasting 10 hours in talk time or 290 hours in standby mode.

On the back we have a 5 megapixel device camera equipped with autofocus, led flash and 2x digital zoom. Videos arecaptured at 720×480 pixels (@20fps).

On the top side of the phone we have the power/sleep button and 3.5 mm jack, while on the bottom is situated the microUSB port and the mic hole. Volume rocker buttons are on the left s ide of the phone.

Android 2.1(Eclair) is the operating system version and the processor is a Qualcomm QSD 8250 having 1 GHz. Nexus one comes with 512Mb memory(both internal and RAM) and a 4 Gb microSD card, but it supports up to 32Gb in case you want to extend it.

Google phone offers plenty connectivity features: GPRS, EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 and microUSB. Gps is also available through A-Gps receiver.

As Google say on google.com/phone you can buy the phone with $529.99(unlocked version) or you can pay $179.99 for 2-year agreement with T-Mobile.

We’ll see if it worth it!
