Intel to Acquire McAfee
NEWS HIGHLIGHTS:

SANTA CLARA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Intel Corporation has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire McAfee, Inc., through the purchase of all of the company’s common stock at $48 per share in cash, for approximately $7.68 billion. Both boards of directors have unanimously approved the deal, which is expected to close after McAfee shareholder approval, regulatory clearances and other customary conditions specified in the agreement.

The acquisition reflects that security is now a fundamental component of online computing. Today’s security approach does not fully address the billions of new Internet-ready devices connecting, including mobile and wireless devices, TVs, cars, medical devices and ATM machines as well as the accompanying surge in cyber threats. Providing protection to a diverse online world requires a fundamentally new approach involving software, hardware and services.

Inside Intel, the company has elevated the priority of security to be on par with its strategic focus areas in energy-efficient performance and Internet connectivity.

McAfee, which has enjoyed double-digit, year-over-year growth and nearly 80 percent gross margins last year, will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel, reporting into Intel’s Software and Services Group. The group is managed by Renée James, Intel senior vice president, and general manager of the group.

The MiFi was first created by Novatel and introduced in the US in 2009. Currently in the United Kingdom the ‘MiFi’ is trademarked and the Internet service is provided solely by the 3 network. Across the globe, carriers such as Vodafone have launched their own MiFi service in countries such as Germany and Spain.

With some providers such as 3, you can opt to buy this device on a monthly contract (18 or 24 months), the more the pay each month, the higher the usage limit or pay a one off fee (Approximately £69.99) for the device and top it up when necessary. The MiFi device has speeds of up to 7.2 Mb, compared to an 8Mb Home Broadband speeds provided from 02 and Plusnet Home Broadband this is a great benefit, especially on the go.

MiFi is a step ahead of the traditional Wi-Fi as to get connected to the Internet all you need to do switch the device on and simply press one button and you’re ready to go, there’s no need to manually connect to this device directly from your laptop, for example.

However it’s not all a bed of roses with this gadget, the MiFi sadly only has a maximum 5 hour battery life, this includes when fully charged. Many have complained that they are suddenly disconnected from the device, which can be very frustrating.

But if you are not ready to take that giant leap to MiFi why not try a Wi-Fi service such as Mobile Broadband. You have more flexibility with Mobile Broadband as there is no need to charge the device, so it’s ready when you are.

Mobile Broadband is very similar to MiFi in many respects, they both allow you to access the Internet on the go without the use of a landline, both are relatively simple to use (MiFi – One button, Mobile Broadband – Need to connect via Laptop and follow a few steps to successfully connect to the web). But one important disadvantage is that with Mobile Broadband you are unable to connect to more than one wireless device.

So if you decide to take out Mobile Broadband you have two options, either Mobile Broadband Pay As You Go or Contracted Mobile Broadband.

In conclusion when opting for either MiFi or Wi-Fi i.e. Mobile Broadband Dongle, its best to do some research into which one would best suit your needs. It’s also best to ask yourself the following questions:

Do I need Internet for more than one wireless device?

Do I need the Internet for more than 5 hours?

Do I mind having a dongle sticking out of my laptop?

Do I want to be bound in an 18 or 24 month contract?

Am I going to need Internet on the go?

The Finnish company really makes a difference when they have to design a cheap phone with quality specs and X3-02 is definitely the one to choose: 3G, GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, microUSB, 3.5 mm audio jack. Unfortunately it lacks GPS, but this is not a big issue for a phone user.

Nokia X3 Touch and Type wants to be a middle-range phone with quality features, low price, but still manage to follow the touchscreen and keyboard trend. It will be available in the Q3 of this year and have a €125 retail price, excluding taxes and subsidies.

Nokia debuts ‘Touch and Type’ design with the latest Nokia X3

Today’s new wonder is called Droid 2 and is an Android 2.2 ready mobile device with a 5 megapixel camera and 1 Ghz processor.

From the first encounter with this phone, you will discover a 3.7-inches TFT screen with 854 x 480 pixel resolution and 16M colors. Sensors(accelerometer and proximity), multi-touch and swype methods are supported.

On the right side of the phone are the volume rockers and the camera shutter key, while on the left is the microUSB port. Above, on the top side of the phone is the Lock/Close button while at the bottom is the microphone.

Like the first Droid, this one has a four row QWERTY keyboard and to unlock it, you have to slide the phone to the right. Different from the original Droid, Droid 2 have replaced the 5 way navigation key with four directional keys.

The 5 megapixel camera is located on the back of the phone and features digital zoom, autofocus and dual LED flash. Videos can be recorded at full 480p (720 x 480 resolution), a lower resolution than previous Droids. Other camera features include: Image stabilization, real-time color effects, scene modes, location tagging, face detection.

Talking about the internals the 1Ghz processor should be the king, but don’t have to forget that Motorola Droid 2 is one of the first mobile device that will come with Android 2.2(Froyo) installed.

Customers can also download favorite apps from Android Market™, which has more than 70,000 applications, and store them on 8 GB of preloaded on-board memory and the 8 GB microSD™ card, which can be upgraded to a 32 GB SD card for a total cargo capacity of 40 GB. Connectivity is flawless as usual for a Motorola smartphone and packs: GPRS, 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, DNLA, GPS and 3.5 mm port jack. Droid 2 supports through it’s 3G mobile hotspot feature up to five compatible Wi-Fi devices connected same time.

Hurry or not, Motorola almost buried the first Droid and is not even a year since it’s announcement.

Motorola Droid 2 was announced this August and is already available in Verizon Wireless stores on a $199.99 fee with two year contract.

The Series 40 operating system of the previous models has been replaced with Symbian version 9.3, an interesting move on Nokia’s part as this system is known for being very unreliable and freezing often. An ARM 11 600 MHz processor completes the view, but we think this was not necessary as the phone lacks both GPS and Wi-Fi features. On the other hand, its HSPA provides lightning fast Internet connectivity, with a download capacity of up to 10Mbps and uploads of up to 2Mbps. The impressive 3G connection is supplemented by Bluetooth 2.0 and USB connectivity as well.

Physically, the phone isn’t ideal for Internet browsing in spite of its fast connection. The phone is just 2.2 inches, nothing like the impressive sizes on offer in the current generation of smart phones and touch screens. The resolution is just 240 by 320 pixels, although it does support an impressive 16 million colours.

One of the phone’s redeeming features is its camera, which at 5 megapixels with Carl Zeiss optics is one of the best available in the 6700 Slide’s price range. It also has built in auto focus and dual flash. There is also a video camera capable of recording in VGA resolution, 640 by 480 pixels, at remarkably high quality. The phone comes with an inbuilt video editor and a secondary video camera for making video calls.

The phone’s music player is Nokia’s popular Nseries, which can effectively handle all of the popular digital media formats. It has an FM radio with RDS, but disappointingly the headphone connection is a Nokia 2.5mm jack so you can’t connect standard 3.5mm headphones. The phone comes with a standard 2GB memory card, enough to hold about 500 mp3 files, and you can choose to upgrade this to anything up to 16GB.

The inbuilt memory of the phone, however, is restricted, with just 60MB onboard. The 6700 Slide’s small battery is restricted and provides poor battery life. It’s as if this phone is trying to be two things at once, the simple slide phone and a smart phone with lightning fast connectivity. Sadly it lacks the best features of both.

It is the camera features on the Vivaz that save it from being just an average unreliable model. It records in HD video, super sharp at 720p resolution. The video recordings include continuous auto focus with an additional light and image stabiliser. This is extremely impressive capacity for a mobile phone, and you can then upload your videos straight to YouTube to show them off. The Vivaz also boasts video calling, certain to become quite in demand over the next couple of years. The still camera on the phone is equally impressive boasting a massive 8.1 megapixel resolution. It also includes face and smile detection, auto-focus, an LED flash and geo-tagging due to the phone’s built in GPS.

The 3.2 inch screen of the phone itself is impressive enough at a resolution of 360 by 640 pixels, but is not quite enough to view your videos at full HD resolution. You’ll have to upload them to a computer for that, or if you have a HD TV you can use the TV-Out to view them on a big screen. Although the system is fully touch screen operated with no physical buttons, an interesting and quirky feature is the handwriting recognition, although this doesn’t really serve any real purpose.

Music wise, the music player on the phone is adequate and has a 3.5mm audio jack so you can use third party headphones. For storage, microSD memory cards of up to 16GB are supported and there is also an FM radio. The built in GPS works with Google Maps and also comes with a little bonus in the demonstration licence of Wisepilot turn-by-turn navigation software, quite an original addition.
Fast Internet access is ensured by the HSPA and for even faster connectivity you can access the phone’s Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g in enabled areas. The phone also has GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth 2.1 and USB connectivity, with built in apps for accessing popular sites like Facebook and YouTube. This is a reliable phone with a good battery life as long as you remember to turn off features like the GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when they aren’t in use.

If you’re not really interested in the stand out camera features, this phone may not really be worth your while. However, the camera features are quite impressive so if that’s your thing then you can pick up a Sony Ericsson Vivaz in a gorgeous red sheen for free at P4u for as little as £25 a month with 600 minutes and 3000 texts. Without a contract Sony Ericsson Vivaz might cost around £290.
